Recently, there has been concern about the toxicity of Cyclomethicone D5 (Cyclopentasilicone), a product which gives a silky, dry feel to skin products. Due to these concerns, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) published its own opinion on the product, proposing restrictions on the use of D5. In light of this, we have compiled a list of possible alternatives which may be used should customers wish to remove it from their formulations, or develop new formulations that will give the same aesthetic feel:

1/ Siltech: Silwax DO2 : INCI Ethyl Methicone.

This product has been specifically developed to replace D5, which is achieved by taking a triglyceride oil (Vegetable oil) and adding as little as 2% Silwax DO2. This effectively lowers the surface tension of the vegetable oil giving it the feel characteristics of D5. The Oil/DO2 Blend can now be used as a one-to-one cost effective replacement for D5. Silwax DO2 has none of the health concerns associated with D5.

2/ Clariant : Plantasens Olive LD and Olive LD-SP ECO : INCI LD : Hydrogenated Ethyl Hexyl Olivate and Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifilables . INCI LD-SP- ECO Coco Caprylate/Caprate , Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifiables.

Two blends, both from renewable resources, both giving the same sensorial performance as D5

3/ Surfatech: Cosmosurf CE grades : INCI: Various depending on the grade e.g., Octadodecyl (alkyl) Citrate Crosspolymers

These products have many attributes one of which is the silky feel of D5. They are all based on renewable raw materials, and some of the range also has Eco-cert approval
